The photo above is a detailed layout of my ideal classroom.
Student Tables - Students will be working at group tables for lesson activities. Students will be collaborating often within the classroom and group tables allow for students to do that effectively. Tables creates a classroom environment that promotes collaboration amongst all students. Although students should have as much choice as possible, at the beginning of the year, I will move students' seats around to enable conversation between all students.
Projector/SmartBoard - SmartBoard is an amazing teaching tool that responds to the tech-savvy generation. Lesson plans and activities on the SmartBoard can be interactive and engaging to students. The SmartBoard also works as a projector for any videos being shared. Teachers can create their own lessons using SmartBoard or download pre-made lessons from other educators.
Individual Desks - Students will not be assigned to the individual desks. The desks are for students to utilize when they feel the need to work in a separate location. They will not be used as a punishment, only for student choice. It is a great way to encourage students to self-managed their behavior and learning.
Rug - The square rug in front of the SmartBoard is for students to gather around for Morning Meeting or instruction. The carpet provides a space for students to come together.
Computers - Like the SmartBoard, computers in the classroom provides an enriching learning experience for students. Computer software such as Kerpoof and Lexia. Students are able to create stories/projects or practice their reading and writing skills. Computers would be a great asset during the Daily 5 (centers). Students are able to take responsibility of their own learning and are able to monitor their progress.
Kidney Table - The purpose of the kidney table is for the teacher to work with a small group of students. Guided reading or tiering activities can be completed during instruction. The kidney table is beneficial for displaying books or models to students up close. It provides a more intimate setting to respond closely to student needs. Any student of any ability can benefit from working in a small group with the teacher.
Reading Corner - The book nook is an essential part of the classroom. Students will be spending a great deal of time independently reading inside and outside the classroom. For about 30 minutes a day, students will be reading a book of their choice. The classroom library will provide various reading levels pertaining to various interests. Students will be able to read wherever they please, but the couch and bean bag chairs are implemented to bring comfort during reading. Students may also utilize the reading corner during group activities.
Fridge & Sink - It is important to respond to students' primary needs in order to respond to their secondary needs. The fridge will hold extra snacks for students to have throughout the day when needed. The sink can be used for drinking water and washing hands.
